Dragons put cloud over Sunshine

Import Justin Lawrence ended his stint with the Doncaster Dragons by giving them something to  remember him by as they won a tight contest at  Sunshine.

Lawrence helped the Dragons end the 2015-16 season on a winning note, pitching a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 game that was over in an hour and 51 minutes.

Allowing just four hits and no walks, Lawrence struck out eight for his second consecutive shutout to cap off a stellar season for the American.

With the wind blowing in and Sunshine starter Rory Meddick also in good form, this was always going to be a pitching duel. Meddick also pitched a complete game, allowing just the one run on five hits and two walks while striking out six.

The only run of the game came in the second inning. Billy Findlay led off with a sharp double down the left field line and moved to third on Marcel D’Avoine’s single. Scott Carr then laid down a squeeze bun that Meddick mishandled, allowing Findlay to score.

Having won two of their final three games, Doncaster finished the season with a 7-16-2 win-loss-draw record. What that means for next season is still anyone’s guess.
