DBC enjoyed a strong 07/08 across all teams
Sunday, 28 September 2008 With Season 08/09 less than one week away, we take you back for a look at last season where our Men wet back to where they belong and the women continued their winning ways.
During 07/08, Doncaster Basebal Club (DBC) was recognised as the 3rd biggest club in Victoria and the 5th nationally. DBC fielded 16 Baseball Victoria competition teams across Men’s, Women and Juniors, with 10 teams playing finals baseball and three winning premierships - Women's Division 1 and 2, and U14 State.
Our Men returned to Division One and surprised all by finishing fourth. Jason Blejwas dominated the competition winning Division 1 League MVP, the batting title and also the home run award.
Our women's program once again lead the way in Victorian, and possibly Australian, women's baseball with four teams - the most of any club in the country - and premierships in both Division 1 & 2. Ailsa Davidson took out the Womens Division 1 MVP following an outstanding season not only on the mound as one of Doncaster's starters, but with the bat.
Davidson, along with Samantha Hamilton, Amy McCann and Bronwyn Gell, was named to the Victorian Women's team which took out the National Championships in Wollongong in March. Hamilton and McCann would later be named to the Australian womens team which would finish fourth at the World Cup in August.
The junior program flourished at all levels, with the U14 state team winning the pennant. More than 20 juniors, at various levels, played representative baseball, which points to a bright future for the club.
Off the field, the club continued growing and improving both with finances and in particular the opening of new first class dual lane undercover batting cage. Also, ongoing meetings and discussions with the council have our interests best presented for more playing fields at the nearby Tikalara Reserve.
