Division 1 defeated Malvern 7-2
In their first game back in the new year, the ladder leading Doncaster Dragons womens first nine resumed their winning ways with a 7-2 victory over the Malvern Braves at Deep Creek on Saturday.
Kathy Welsh started on the mound for the Dragons and in what was her best performance of the season to date, Welsh held the Braves batters to just four hits and one earned run across 5 2/3 innings, whilst striking out five.
The Dragons got off to a great start with five runs of their own across the first two innings, and despite their bats scoring only two more for the game, it was enough to grab the win.
With the bat, the standouts were teenagers Bronwyn Gell and Belinda Cannington who both collected two hits each, with Erin Collins also collecting two.
Special mentions to catcher Amy Collins who once again was a wall behind the plate, blocking every ball and also holding runners well. Also to the solid defense from the outfield throughout the game.
"Although we started well and did not go on with it, I am happy to get the win in our first game back as anything can happen after not playing a game for five weeks," said Head Coach Samantha Hamilton.
"But as we only play every other team once more before the finals, we need to step it up with each inning, and each game, before finals to really make sure we are in top form."
