Well the rain held off and we got in a full weekend of baseball. Thank goodness for the rain overnight and today - our ground definitely needed a good drink.
The weekend started off on Saturday with our Women teams having a weekend with 3 wins. One was a result of Werribee forfeiting our 2s game late Friday, but the 1s and 3s both had fantastic wins. The hitting and base running by both teams were top notch. Congratulations to the Women teams. After 4 weeks into the Season, the three teams combined only have 1 loss.
Sunday morning our Juniors were up at the crack of dawn and off to their respective games. We had 2 wins out of the 6 games. Our mighty U14s led the way !! The U14 State team had a great win against Cheltenham at home, keeping their undefeated streak going. And the U14 Metro traveled to Cheltenham and had a decisive win 17 - 8. The U12 State team had it all happening until the last inning when Waverley stole the win from them scoring 3 runs. Our U12 Metro played at Cheltenham and went down to some very good competition. Our U18s could not make it two wins in a row and our U16s had a great game vs Essendon losing against a very experienced team.
The afternoon did not go as well as we would have liked. 5 of our Senior Men teams played Waverley (Berwick forfeited against our 5As). We came up against some very good pitching from the Waverley camp. Our five teams combined were outscored 45 to our 24. Our 3s and 5Bs brought home wins - both with close games winning 7 - 6. Our 5Bs game, for the third week in a row, was decided in the bottom of the last inning. Their past three rounds have been a WIN, DRAW, WIN with only three runs in total separating them and their opposition. The team is playing really well together - with youth and those not so young, experience and those just learning the game. The 3s played in a very close game - winning in the bottom of the last inning with a walk off home run.
One of the highlights of the day was Daniel McGrath hitting 2 home runs at Deep Creek - one in the U16s over the Centre field fence and then another one in the 3s over the Left field fence in the last inning . I would like to think he takes after his mother - but I know too many of you would disagree !!
All the coaches are puttiing in reports each week - so have a read and see how the various teams went over the weekend.
The Mens 1s are at Altona this Thursday vs Geelong - the late game (8:50 pm start) - it would be great if we could get a few supporters to the game - but understandably it is not a good time slot and not the most appealing venue.
Everyone should set aside Tuesday evening the 9th of December - our Men 1s are playing at Doncaster at 6 pm. They will be hosting Malvern, so it is sure to be a fantastic game. We will be putting on some good food at the Club - so bring the family down, have some dinner and watch some great baseball. The game starts at 6 pm and goes until about 8 pm.
Best of luck to all the Juniors waiting to hear if they made a State team - they are all getting their emails today.
I am looking forward to Cup Day down at the Club tomorrow. I have not put my name in for the Doncaster "Stawell" Gift, but I am sure to put in a few gold coins into the Sweep !! Come on down if you get a chance - we will have the barbeque going and it will be a good day to just kick back, have a game of cricket and watch a few races.
See you all soon.
